Got up at an early hour, had breakfast, went out & worked, - - -
Growing up, Dad insisted that we always had raisin bread in the house. I came to learn that it was from his CCC experience. When he first arrived at the camp, they had raisin bread one morning. My Depression Era father had never tasted anything sweet before. He asked the cook how he could get more. They struck a deal. Dad would come in at 3 AM and peel potatoes for a couple hours before breakfast and the cook would give him 2 slices of raisin bread. Throughout his life raisin bread became his symbol of security and reward for hard work.
