To be fair, when I see a large crowd drinking/partying, etc., living it up as if nothing's going on, I feel some of the judgmental disdain you're talking about.
But I don't do large group gatherings (clubs, sporting events, etc.) these days, so I can't relate to what they're personally feeling or going through. Are they behaving irresponsibly with COVID-19 out there? Absolutely. Is it worth forcing everyone to wear masks everywhere, regardless of circumstances? Probably not.
At the top of my admittedly selfish, folksy pile of logic: 1) If you have to wear a mask to feel safe doing something, you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place. 2) Making everyone wear a mask to make the more concerned/worried feel safe is just as selfish as those doing their own thing without a mask.
If any factors were different - like COVID-19 had a mortality rate of smallpox, or I'd seen it firsthand in my neighborhood - I will probably change my mind and comply with the mask suggestions. But the sum of all fears here just doesn't justify mask wearing everywhere at this point, IMO. I'll be safe - but I'm not gonna walk around steaming my glasses up all day in June heat when I hardly go out in public anyways.
If you disagree, we'll just have to disagree on our definitions of what is responsible.
(I will say this - I don't think I'll be doing high fives with strangers in close quarters in SDS if ASU plays this fall.)
