October 17, 1989 I was at the corner of Van Ness and California in downtown San Francisco. Luckily I had moved my hotel reservations from Santa Cruz to the SF airport area to attend an engineering design review. I was also fortunate to have checked into the hotel, but I kept my luggage in the car. That turned into a couple of unbelievable days getting a sterile fill and finish plant back on line.
The week before, a company manager invited me to dinner at his home in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was just off Summit Road. He had built a beautiful A frame cabin with a deck that wrapped the home. As we walked the deck, he pointed to the San Andreas fault that ran through the corner of his lot. On Oct 17th, the house was flattened and half the deck slid down the maintain into the fault. It took the Art and his wife well into the night to make it from Sunnyvale to their home. The only thing they found unbroken was a bottle of scotch. They passed it back and forth until it was all gone; then they slept on the remaining piece of deck.
