. . . to close the gap. It's extremely doubtful that we ever will close that gap. There is really no comparison between the two schools. USC has a long and storied tradition of championships, top draft picks, and Heisman Trophy winners. (Link) We just don't. (Although we can proudly claim one more Salad Bowl victory than they can.)
S.C. is also located right in the middle of a huge coastal population center with a nearly perfect climate and where many top recruits hail from, most of whom have watched and admired the Trojans since childhood. The fact that we've recently enjoyed some recruiting success in their neighborhood says a lot about Edwards, A.P., and Co. It also says something about Helton. As much as I hate to admit it and as much as we all would like it to be different this dynamic is highly unlikely to ever change - that is until the big one (quake)comes. Still, we can dream.
We do have a way better mascot. (Not that silly fork, mind you. I'm talking about good ol' Sparky, the grinin', goateed Sun Devil.) I'll never understand how those Southern Calites ever selected the Trojan to represent them as their mascot. The Trojans were badly duped by the Greeks who used the gift of a massive trophy horse to stroke the collective Trojan ego and thereby gain easy entrance the independent city in order to defeat them. And defeat them they did! Trojans are quintessential losers by their own hubris and stupidity. Thus, it's an atrocious mascot. Maybe the second worst (after the Wildpussies of course).
