Pete Carroll resurrected a USC program that then fell back into a coma after his departure. I used to work with some big USC boosters that claimed that Pete was the perfect HC for handling the politics of billionaire boosters and still having the time to maintain an organized football program. That made me wonder about other such storied programs such as Texas, Florida State and Alabama. Prime recruiting centers, lots of money, big stadiums and fanatics for fans. All lost their prominent place in college football over time.
Alabama was an interesting study. Bear Byant won 6 National Titles and 13 conference titles, then comes the drought.
Nationally recognized HCs Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione, Mike Price (stopped in for a lap dance) and Mike Shula combined for 1 national title. Then comes Nick Saban to win another 6. Saban is as organized at football as Kelly Johnson was at leading the Skunk Works. Every activity has a purpose. Everything gets measured and monitored. Every member of the athletic department has a assigned activities, goals and metrics. People are assigned to follow up on the details. Saban maintains a summary level dashboard and expects a morning report if any dashboard indicator is not green.
