B/R did a calculation and came up with an average of about $41,700 per year. That did not include the NCAA required health, disability and catastrophic insurance policies on each player. It also did not account for Pell Grants that the schools can offer. There is also a $54 million NCAA pool that each school can dig into for direct payments to families that need financial assistance.
The flip side -
Business Insider found that overall, the average FBS player is worth $163,087 a year to the school. But Texas tops the list with $666k generated per football player. Alabama - $545K. Norte Dame - $489K. That means many schools must be in the red. If ASU cancelled sports, I wonder if student tuition would be reduced to return the $20M sports fees automatically added.
