We moved to Phnx in '49 and lived on 25th st and Devonshire. We were 1 1/2 miles out of town. I do think that the "heat island" effect of roofs and roads have pushed the storms to the perimeter. I can still remember the smell of the fresh straw in late spring when the swamp cooler was refreshed. It was a great place to be a kid.
We would raid the neighbors fruit trees..plums, apricots and peach trees were everywhere. At 75 I now confess that it was the brothers and me that did the dastardly deed.
