I can see how O-side drew the conclusion that Anderson asserted that we needed to get more 4 and 5 star athletes. I can also understand that so far we've recruited a lot of 3 star athletes in this class - so far. Last year, however, we brought in one of the finest classes I've seen in a long time. Lots of 4*s.
With that said, it is my opinion that these are not the same kind of 3* recruits that TG recruited. There are more and bigger linemen and more and longer secondary players. There's better football speed and quickness. When recruits explain why they chose ASU nearly all mention the NFL experience of this staff and the confidence they have in them. The three star guys this staff brought in early on have become very good players, guys like Ayiuk (a three star), Merlin Robertson, Butler and Dohnovan West (other three stars), etc. We've also brought in some excellent transfers such as Jack Jones, Hattis, and Diesch while limiting JC transfers and developing the team from mostly frosh who have years to develop in the system. We're balancing the classes so that we're not deficient in critical areas such as OL DL etc. This way we can restock instead of perennially being in rebuilding or crisis mode (such as we've had to do with the OL during the past few years). It is obvious to me that these coaches are certainly developing quality talent instead of bringing in smallish and more questionable specimens while moving people all around and never allowing players to develop skills at their position. I don't see many so called lost boys around here anymore. There was a fair amount of attrition early on and that limited us in terms of available scholarships. That seems to be mostly in the past at this point. Thank god.
The new class, which is far from complete, has great size and speed and much potential. Our entire team is really shaping up to be something special. There's now talent at every position. They're building depth and recruiting nationally. The key word here is "development". The players are improving noticeably from year to year. Nearly all the coaches are recruiting rather than just one or two and we are now back in California with a big presence. TG was not held in the sort of high esteem that HE and his staff are. In fact, the opposite was true. Lots of guys didn't want to come here because of him. The players are enjoying playing for these guys. The NFL experience on this staff is paying dividends.
Therefore, it is my personal conclusion that HE & Co. is fulfilling expectations with regard to upgrading recruiting. This is a work in progress but that progress seems apparent to me and I think many others here as well.
