Health care providers are/were monetarily incentivized to identify COVID-19, as part of a patient's ailments, by both Medicare and private insurance. (Other countries may have different biases to suppress the count of COVID deaths and positive tests.) There are no apples to apples comparisons available.
There have been stories about motor accident victims dying in the ER, but who are classified as COVID related deaths, once the post mortem tests come back. Further, there are stories about the NY debacle with nursing homes - which assert that the actual figures of deaths are worse than reported, because if a nursing home patient was ill and removed from the home, and then died in transit to, or at, a hospital, then that patient did not "count" as a nursing home death. IDK.
We may never know how the breakdown of patients who died "from" COVID, vs. patients who died "with" COVID.
