IMO, it's the same folksy logic that a ratings-chasing news network (like OAN) would use to state that the Earth is probably flat because it wouldn't be scientifically sounds to just assume that we all live on a huge ball. When people point out that the moon is round, they just say, "Well, we're not the moon, so you just can't assume the Earth is round, too."

In other words, the SEC, ACC, and Big-12 found a scapegoat in a lab coat that told them what they wanted to hear so they could do what they so desperately wanted to do - fund their athletic programs and please the fans (including themselves) during a lockdown that's made everyone a little stir crazy.
