It's basic actuarial analysis. Of course, it can't be 100% accurate--I mean, someone could get hit by a car and die tomorrow, even though they were projected to live another 30 years.
And to that point, there was a study early this year that estimated the average person dying from COVID would have lived for at least another 10 years. The fact that we have something like 200k+ excess deaths relative to last year shoots a big hole in the argument that most of the people dying of COVID had one foot in the grave already.
