He said that all the colleges recruited veteran players to come and play under new identities. Although players signed up for classes, nobody ever attended. The passing grades were already in the books as part of the deal. School administrations never looked too hard at the programs.
I asked him why he he did it instead of starting a career. He answered that college is the best place to be when you are 20, no class pressure, beautiful coeds everywhere and the school picking up the tab for room, board and incidentals, boosters offering good paying jobs that did not require you to show up - and all the football you wanted to play. And remember, pro football was just starting. There was as much money available playing college ball taking money from boosters and schools. I think he also repeated the coed thing a couple times.
