A McKinsey consultant once told me that such an executive insert was like blood in the water to business consulting sharks. The first thing they do is evaluate roles and responsibilities for direct reports. If direct report activity stays the same, the new exec demonstrates no value-added. They force the new exec to take responsibility for prior direct report final decisions. Then, if the new exec is now expected to make final decisions that that his reports once made, the direct reports become susceptible to cuts or demotions.
All that is left for the consultants to do is to have the direct reports turn against one another as they play Corporate Survivor to see who gets voted off the island. With a smile he said that they seldom looked above the new executive because that was usually the person that was approving the invoices.
