If the Sun Devils defense can knock off the rust, it stands a good chance of shutting down the UCLA offense. The UCLA offence is predicated on a productive running game. Demetric Felton has racked up 537 rushing yards in the first 4 games, including 207 against Arizona. But tonight he will be running at Foreman (300 lbs), Davidson 320 lbs), Sole(310 lbs) and Matus (260 lbs). That is a pretty good line with Roberson, Butler and Soelle backing them at the LB positions.
When the field switches, the UCLA defense plays an aggressive 3-4 that often takes on the appearance of a 6 man line. They stunt and blitz from every angle. Against Arizona, the UCLA defense was most effective in pressuring up the center of the line with LBs shooting the gaps created by Arizona having to double team 333 lb NT, Otito Ogbonnia. Once the Wildcat QB was in scramble mode, the UCLA defense controlled the field. ASU may not have had enough game time for its line to play together and form an effective cohesive group. But Daniels has the mobility to beat the UCLA tactics with quick passes to WRs that can make big plays. The ASU running game is strong enough to bust some off-tackle plays to slow down much of the blitzing as well. A lot will depend on ASU's interior line being able to hold up against UCLA's constant pressure.
Football is back! Go Devils!
