a squad of 13. Each time that I was able to get in a game we were usually way ahead. The coach would say something like let's give these guys a break. Run down the clock. Make a lot of passes. Don't take too many shot. Don't run up the score any more.
The first couple of games That I was in I took a couple of shots and the coach took me out. He said if I want to play don't shoot anymore. By the way I made all five shots I took.
Ever since then, I have compassion for bench players that don't play very often. Most coaches will not let them play their regular game for fear of running up the score. I don't agree with this philosophy. Let everyone play their best.
Obviously, if a coach leaves his first team in and continues to run up the score, when the game is a blow out then that is wrong. But telling their bench players who hardly ever get in that they should "run out the clock" is wrong.
