Both games look VERY similar. ASU took their foot off of the gas. Even the TD to go up 35-0 looked a lot like Keith Poole's FU when Chris McAllister roughed him. The ASU HC had to talk nice about the UA coach after the game to support him. ASU had a very balanced offensive output (50/50 run/pass yardage).
In favor of 1996: Take away a fluky pick-six in '96 in the 3rd quarter, and it would've been 56-7. And the Cats were a decent team at 5-5 going in (playing for a possible bowl invite), while this year's Tucson team was more of a doormat on an 11 game losing streak. And ASU ran dive plays non-stop to slow it down to 56.
In favor of 2020: Foot on the throat in 60 seconds and it was never in question after that. That opening TD return for like 107 yards (the first opening TD return in Territorial Cup history) and scoring 14 in under 60 seconds. Even the ESPN guys were verbally jerking off by the 3rd quarter just trying to stay interested. "Oh hey - a fumble!" "and.. oh - another interception." And a Chinese WALK-ON scores a rushing TD. (Is that the first Chinese national/student to score an FBS TD?)
I want to say '96 by a hair, but if Sumlin gets fired, 2020 gets the nod.
