Let me state that a healthy rivalry should be based on fierce competition between 2 worthy opponents. In the long history of our rivalry there have been stretches where either team has not lived up to that requirement. Unfortunately, Arizona seems to now be in one of those periods of funk. Although Sumlin has not recruited well, your program may not be in as bad a shape as this score suggests. Covid and injuries depleted your Cats for this game and the ASU staff was smart enough to game plan around your weaknesses. But although I saw a lot of Cat anger and frustration, I did not see any Cats give up or tank it on the field.
In 1995, ASU took a 77 point beating from Nebraska. That low point galvanized the Sun Devil squad and focused its energy for the 1996 rematch. The result was a undefeated 1996 regular season and an historic Nebraska ass kicking. Maybe this low point will be your rallying point and a Plummer or Tillman will emerge to lead your returning players.
I fear economics may require Arizona to stick with Sumlin. I see his fatal flaw as Sumlin being a system coach that cannot adjust to the players. Maybe this season will be his wake up call. Maybe he will recruit better. Maybe he can patch up the program to leave a better foundation for his future replacement. How many years are left on his contract? Fire your Ad if he grants Sumlin a contract extension.
