I recently read an article on the future recruiting chaos being created by the NCAA making well intended COVID rulings. The transfer portal is in the center of the chaos. The portal is now overwhelmed with players looking to transfer under the immediate eligibility provisions. But the schools have limited scholarships available because of the additional NCAA rulings regarding a free year of eligibility to existing squad players and Post COVID limits of 25/85 scholarships remaining in effect. Soon many players will find that their schools have more players with eligibility than they have scholarships to covered them and the transfer portal will be completely overwhelmed.
Every signed transfer adds to the future scholarship deficit because the school uses an allotment of its 25 four-year scholarships on a 1 year player. The 25/85 balance for the ensuing next 3 years is in jeopardy because the schools will not be able to exceed the annual 25 scholarship per year limits.
Throw in player name, image, likeness (NIL) pay laws passed in California and union activists trying to organize players to overturn all NCAA transfer regs as an NIL restraint of trade violation and we end up with - chaos.
