I am always glad to see ASU sign bigs, but I have to step back and look at this offer more objectively.
This was a 2-star rated recruit that chose to go on a 2 year mission. Yes, he is now more mature, but I doubt that 2 years away from football added to his athletic ability. In most cases, such a project would be invited as a preferred walk-on.
Next question - is he a better line candidate than the 3-star recruits that had their offers pulled? We have speculated that Edwards threw back these ranked linemen to trade up to blue chip players. Now, I worry about the timing of this offer. I hope that investing a scholarship on a project is not an indication that the Edwards has few big surprises coming in January.
Donít take this post the wrong way. I hope Veikoso can develop into a starter. Much of efficient line play is predicated on disciple and technique. These are learned traits and coached muscle memory. Therefore linemen can be created much easier that skill positions that require God given speed or fluid hips and balance.
