Here is another Mom and Dad story.
In 1996, both were fighting cancer and the chemo treatments had taken their toll. Mom was in a wheelchair and Dad needed a walker. Even though they were warned to stay out of crowds because of their compromised immune systems, they insisted that I take them to the Cal game to watch ASU clinch the Rose Bowl bid. They remembered the great time we had at the Cal game in 1986 and wanted to see ASU win another Rose Bowl invitation. So we packed them up and seated them in the North End Zone Handicap section. It was like a big patio area just behind the North end zone seating sections.
Biggest crowd in SDS history went nuts after the game and stormed the field. In the chaos, I see my frail father working his way down the steps with his walker and I can't catch him because I'm pushing my Mom's wheelchair. I yell to him, Dad what are you doing? What about Mom?
He turns and shouts back, "She's not going to be much help in that wheelchair, but bring her along if you want."
Somehow he made to the field without getting killed. I sat there and watched this crazy old man dancing in the North End Zone. In the midst of all that pandemonium, I don't think anybody even bumped into him. We finally made it back to the car. Before either of them has a chance to speak, I declared, "NO! you are not getting my Rose Bowl tickets this time."
Happy ending - they both beat their cancers and both lived for another 10 years.
