Cherry was a train wreck in high school. He was benched by his coach on several occasions and was eventually expelled from school. But I checked his senior year stats and, at least on paper, he was more than a 3 point shooter. He took 316 2-point shoots vs 128 3s. He hit 43% of his 3s and 59% of his 2s. He also averaged a little over 11 rebounds a game and was rated as one of the best power forwards in his recruiting class. The 59% shooting and rebound average suggest he did a lot of work in the paint.
Cherry also stated in an interview that he chose ASU because Hurley recruited him to be a spread 3 shooter. So he became a willing Hurley system player. I will always wonder if he had untapped talent that was never developed as a Spread 3 shooter. He was seldom called upon to use his 59% intermediate range shooting and 11 rebound talent.
