When you watch Ken Burns's documentary about it, it's eye opening how it is (to some controversially) presented - the history, the decision-making processes, the politics, the terrible costs for everyone involved (especially the Vietnamese people on both sides).
I believe that their sacrifice may be the most painful this side of the Civil War. When they should've been at home living their lives and serving their country by being good American citizens and/or parents, those 58,000 men (mostly draftees) died as bravely serving their country as any of their fathers who served in World War II.
They truly deserve our utmost respect and should never be forgotten.
