I haven't been posting much on here for the last several years, but I can't resist discussing some baseball issues at this time.
I was surprised but pleased by the firing. I would have fired our previous coach after the first losing season in ASU baseball history. Deinitely after the second one. That said, I expected that with the modicum of success this year, he would be given another chance. So, YAY for the firing.
As far as choosing Bloomquist, I'm optimistic that it will prove to be a great hire. As usual, it will depend to some extent on the people he surrounds himself with, but his attitude and experiences as a player and observer leave me with high hopes.
At a minimum, I expect to see immediate improvement in the area that dismayed me most about the teams under Tracy. That is, baseball fundamentals. I saw more glaring errors, physical and mental, than one would ever accept from college level players. That's particularly true since the recruiting was pretty good and we were seeing these errors from highly talented players, several of whom anticipated careers as professionals, with hopes of reaching the major leagues.
I can accept losing a game here and there, but failing to field the ball or run the bases in a smart manner push me over the edge. I remember vividly seeing one of our pitchers toss an underhand over the head of the first baseman in the type of error that should never happen.
I've never been to Omaha. In 2010 I swore that I would go the next time the Sun Devils were there. Never thought I'd have to wait more than a decade!
