Actually, I have become an admirer after researching Sabanís coaching, training and managing methods for a couple years now. The ASU component that I failed to mention was that the new Sports Science Director, Matt Rhea, received his PhD from ASU. Itís bad enough to see local kids leave the area. Now I also hate to see ASU technology being used by other teams.
I find the new sports science approach is fascinating. Literally every player is fully analyzed and conditioning programs and nutrition guidelines are created for each. Telemetry feedback is used to modify player programming to reduce training injuries and to optimize performance gains. Apparently many player injuries are caused by an imbalance in muscle system development that can be corrected. This is a complete departure from Scott Cockran yelling, barking and running players until they dropped. The new goal is to still be bigger, faster and stronger than the opponent, but to be injury free as well.
