College Football has definitely changed. But money has always been a huge influence. It's just that now the players are being financially rewarded for their efforts. It's the American way. It's capitalism. I don't like the advantage this new normal gives to the perennial powerhouses.
It has never been a level playing field if you really think about it, though. Some teams get more home games than others. Some teams play more upper level teams than others. More money flows to the top performing schools. This will only exacerbate that imbalance. Sooner or later folks might get tired of the same 4 or 5 teams winning the championship and raking in all the cash. I doubt it though.
I, too, feel myself losing interest just as I have with the NFL. But as I've aged I've let many things go. I don't eat hot dogs anymore and beer doesn't appeal to me much either. The younger fans who aren't familiar with CFB's age of innocence (maybe that term is a bit maudlin) will accept the changes that are sold to them and we will soon be dead.
We live in a kaleidoscope world. Every thing is changing rapidly and there seems to be no terra firma beneath our feet. The pace of change has accelerated and as we get older it gets more difficult to adapt. Some changes are good and some are bad. Or both at once. It all depends on one's perspective. I can't keep up on which teams are in which conferences anymore. But I suspect that I will continue watching the amazing individual athletic performances, though I won't care as much about rivalries and championships. Maybe I won't have a favorite team.
I can certainly sympathize with your sentiments. Today I can do without the crowds, the high ticket costs, the parking hassles, the drunk and obnoxious fans, and especially the loud PA system blasting out endless noisy advertising. Now I prefer the couch, the mute button, my refrigerated food locker and a clean, unoccupied bathroom. And I'm good with that.
