I had to work hard to master differential calculus and Fourier transforms. I finally did it, but I still have not figured out NCAA eligibility.
The goal of its convoluted COVID rules was to extend the clock for a player to use his 4 years of eligibility from 5-to-play-4 to 6-to-play-4. The class designation and petition for the 6th year is left to the discretion of each school. That is to allow each school to manage the financial obligations of extending scholarships for the longer term. Basically, a player may be able to participate in football for 6 years to use his 4 years of eligibility, but that does not mean a school must offer a scholarship for all 6 years. This is going to turn the transfer portal into a free agency nightmare next year.
Putting Covid rules aside, ASU only played 4 games, so all its qualified players should have picked up a normal redshirt year. For example, Merlin Robertson and Darien Butler started as true freshmen in 2018 and sophomores 2019, but played the NCAA allowed 4 games in 2020 to be classified as a redshirt year. These guys should now be classed on the roster as RS Juniors and not seniors. Similarly, Daniels should be a RS sophomore, and not a junior, with 3 years of eligibility remaining.
Basically, the entire ASU roster seems to be screwed up. Maybe the athletic department needs a couple dozen more Athletic Directors to assign to the task of publishing accurate information.
