Dog days of summer.
About this time each year, I get tired of the speculative talk, lazy prognostications, and want some action. My interest wanes and the season seems so far off.
That's where we are now.
Then fall camp starts. Players step up in practice and build our expectations, injuries shut the door on some others, I begin to invite seat mates and make plans for gameday. Excitement and anticipation grow.
The investigation is sort of like a bad smell in the room. We can't ignore it and it will bother some more than others. Our opponents will be sure to bring it up. There may be some serious rot behind the smell but in the meantime, we have to ignore it, move on and do the best we can while we can. It doesn't really stop us from doing what we need to do.
I'll be there on gamedays, except for some damned fall weddings, wearing gold and yelling as loudly as I can for as long as I can. The efforts of the players and our memories of the games can't be erased by the NCAA investigation, so let's rock SDS like the NCAA didn't exist. If we have to take medicine for some f*ck-ups, so be it, but let's win this season.
