Sun Devil fans,
It's time for me to make my annual, well, I didn't make predictions in 2020, because it was a horses**t year altogether. Anyway, I'm back to make my game by game predictions of how I think our Sun Devils will do in 2021, here goes:
ASU 49 Southern Utah 7 ASU is varsity, Southern Utah is junior varsity. This game should not be close.
ASU 38 UNLV 13 ASU gets payback for the 2008 upset by the Rebels at Sun Devil Stadium. That game, was the beginning of the end for Dennis Erickson at ASU. Up until that game against UNLV, Erickson had a 12-3 record at ASU, along with a 8-2 Pac-10 record.
ASU 27 BYU 17 This will be ASU's first road game. The Cougars will give ASU all they want, but ASU will pull away in the second half for a solid road win over a BYU team that lost a lot of talent off of the 2020 team. I have a feeling that BYU would've been tougher to beat last year in Sun Devil Stadium, than they will be this year at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
ASU 34 Colorado 23 Coach Edwards FINALLY beats the Colorado Buffaloes. That's right, ASU has not beaten Colorado since 2017 (Todd Graham's last season in Tempe). The Buffaloes have had ASU's number since then, winning in Boulder in 2018, in Tempe in 2019, and not playing in 2020. ASU wins against Ralphie in Sun Devil Stadium this year.
UCLA 31 ASU 24 For whatever reason, the Bruins seem to have ASU's number. Chip Kelly's squad has given Herm Edwards teams fits since 2018. ASU barely beat a bad UCLA team late in the 2018 season, 31-28 at Sun Devil Stadium. Then, in 2019, UCLA crushed ASU 42-32 at the Rose Bowl, the score was 42-10 going to the fourth quarter, ASU scored 3 "oh, by the way" touchdowns to make the final score look closer than the game actually was in Pasadena. Last year, ASU hadn't played for three weeks due to the Covid bulls**t, fell behind 0-17, then rallied to take a 18-17 lead with about 3 and a half minutes to go in the game, only to allow the Bruins to drive 75 yards in 10, or 11 plays to take the lead at 25-18. It seems to be a problem for Coach Edwards to "match up" well with Chip Kelly's UCLA Bruins. I think ASU takes their first loss in Pasadena to the Bruins.
ASU 28 Stanford 17 This game will have some extra "spice" to it in 2021. David Shaw has been very vocal/ critical of Herm Edwards and ASU for allegedly hosting recruits on campus during the Covid lockdown stuff. ASU hasn't beaten Stanford since 2014, when the Sun Devils stuffed the Cardinal 26-10 in Tempe. I see a similar type game in 2021, with ASU winning by double digits. It ought to make for an interesting post game handshake.
ASU 24 Utah 20 This game has me concerned, because of the way the Utes beat down ASU in 2019, the last time the two teams played. That game was by far, Jayden Daniels worst game at ASU. I think Jayden goes into Salt Lake City with something to prove in 2021. ASU squeaks out a close win in the fourth quarter.
ASU 33 Washington State 21 The Cougars always seem to play ASU tough. I think they give ASU another tough game in 2021, but I think ASU ends up winning by a couple of touchdowns. The Sun Devils are more talented than WSU, in my opinion, the overall talent will show itself in the second half of this game.
ASU 27 USC 24 This is THE GAME for ASU in 2021. The Sun Devils have struggled mightily to beat the Trojans since the famed "Jael Mary" in 2014. The Trojans have won big in 2015, 16, and 17. ASU won 38-35 in 2018 in Coliseum, Herm's first year as the Sun Devils coach. USC then won by 5 points in 2019, and 1 stinking point in the soul crushing loss at the Coliseum in 2020. Simply put, if ASU wants to win the Pac-12 South in 2021, then USC is a MUST win! I think ASU gets over the USC hump in Sun Devil Stadium in early November.
Washington 35 ASU 20 This game as bad result written all over it, in my opinion. ASU will be coming off of an emotional win (I believe) over USC, and will be traveling to potential nasty mid-November weather in Seattle, Washington. Oh, and they will be playing a very good/ great Huskies team. I think this game could get ugly for ASU.
ASU 34 Oregon State 24 The Sun Devils travel to Corvallis, Oregon, for a third consecutive season, all in the late months of the season, meaning most likely, nasty weather. The Sun Devils lost 34-35 in 2019, when a late 2 point conversion failed. Last year, ASU went to Corvallis, and ran the ball down the Beavers throat. I expect more of the same in 2021. I think ASU gets a solid road win again this year against the Beavers.
ASU 38 Arizona 17 I think this game will be tougher than the final score indicates. The U of A will play their ass off against ASU in 2021, after last year's embarrassing beat down in Tucson, by the Sun Devils. I think this is a tough game for the first 2 to 3 quarters, then ASU scores a couple of late touchdowns to blow it open. ASU is just better talent wise, than the U of A is right now, I think the emotion keeps it close until the 4th quarter, then ASU's talent takes over to win the game by 3 touchdowns.
So, I have ASU going 10-2 overall, 7-2 in Pac-12 play. I think this will be good enough for ASU to win the Pac-12 South and advance to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Championship Game against either Oregon, or Washington, whoever wins that game in Seattle this year. Right now, I like ASU to win a rematch with the Huskies in the Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas. Those are my predictions Sun Devil fans. Let me know what you think? ASU is loaded with 20 starters back from last year (9 on offense, and all 11 back on defense). Just keep Jayden Daniels healthy, and I think ASU returns to Pasadena, California, and the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, for the first time since January 1, 1997. Go Sun Devils!
