As an undergraduate engineering student in the 80's, it took a minimum of about 140 hours to get your degree, if you came in to school without any college credits. As a result, some of us had to take more than the 4 years to complete it. I entered school Fall, 1982 just two victories away from moving to a tie in the overall rivalry series.
I thought it was a foregone conclusion that we would do that during my undergraduate tenure, but actually going to the Rose Bowl still seemed a ways away. Then WSU beat UW and we only needed to beat them to go my freshman year. Three years later, we just needed a tie going into the 4th qtr with a 13-3 lead. A punt not fair caught would bring them within 3 and Max Zendejas would put us away with two long field goals. Thankfully, it did not matter my 2nd senior year in 1986, but I tell everyone I could have gone 3 out of my 5 years at school, if we had just done what we did regularly prior to that. The other big issue is that we are still not close to bringing that rivalry record close to where it was when I entered the school about 40 years ago!
