Place kickers rarely affect the 40 yard line decisions. That would be a 57 yard FG. The 40-50 range is where Herm was able to rely on an experienced punter to pin the opponent inside its 20. [Graham went to theTaylor Kelly pooch kick. TK was a master of rolling the ball to the 5 yard line.]
Forty yard FGs are actually kicked from the 23. Fifty yard FGs from the 33. So PKs typically influence coaching inside the 30.
The big change will need to come from Edwards. Every year he talks about needing to score more - attack the edges and pass more. But we end up favoring a ball control, field position strategy. Old school ball keeps us in most games and limits the win/lose outcome to about a 10 minutes stretch in the 4th quarter. I doubt that Jan Stenerud could change Hermís comfort zone.
