I agree with you regarding Thursday games, heat
and fanbase. I don't think it prepares us for tough conference games, but does give scrimmage value.
One of the reasons I argue with all the praise the MIGHTY SEC gets, is their OOC.
EVERY YEAR the SEC plays 3-4 "meaningless" games, but it's never held against them in judgement of scheduling. I always look in the month of November for the SEC scrimmage schedule. Don't get me wrong, PERFECT timing to get starters rest and healing, like a second bye-week...brilliant. But, how would our beloved PAC get torn apart by the E(SEC)PN pundits if our teams scheduled MERCER, or SAMFORD, or WOFFORD on a regular basis??
For illustration, I did a little research into just this year's schedule. Nine teams as a sample (6 top 25, 3 unranked.
#1 ALABAMA - MERCER, SOUTHER MISS, New Mexico State
#5 GEORGIA - Univ Alabama at Birmingham, Charleston Southern (only 2 cupcakes!)
#6 TEXAS A&M - Kent State, New Mexico, Prairie View A&M
#11 FLORIDA - Florida Atlantic, South Florida, SAMFORD (credit South Fla for not being a complete patsy)
#13 LSU - McNeese, Central Michigan, UL Monroe
#25 OLE MISS - Austin Peay, Tulane, LIBERTY
UR AUBURN - AKRON, Alabama State, Georgia State
UR KENTUCKY - UL Monroe, CHATTANOOGA, New Mexico State
UR TENNESSEE - Bowling Green, Tennessee Tech, South Alabama
(UR = unranked)
...this kinda crap belongs on the C'MON segment of SVP.
