ASU had a nearly 50/50 split in rushing vs. passing yards on offense. Any team with balance like that is going to do well throughout the year.
They put up 40+ without throwing a single TD pass. That's the kind of football that demoralizes other teams. In contrast, does anyone else remember the 2003 NAU debacle almost 20 years ago, where ASU couldn't punch it in on multiple goal line stands against NAU?? THAT was rightly something to be concerned about (that team ended with a 5-6 year). This game was nothing like that.
Maybe people took Southern Utah for granted too much? The whole, "The Devils have to crush them by 50+ or they're gonna suck," mantra was never realistic. Those people don't appreciate just how little of a gap there is between FBS and FCS teams anymore. Don't think so? Ask Tulsa - who just lost to UC Davis 19-17 at home tonight. Would you rather be a Tulsa alum right now?
Yeah, it wasn't 70-7. It was never gonna be like that. I said 45-0 - I just didn't count on the penalties. (Unless you're Dennis Erickson's undisciplined staff, that's fixable.)
After ASU dismantles UNLV in the 2nd half next week after a similar oddball start, I'm looking forward to the BYU game in Provo. That game will tell us what we're really in for this year.
