Even John Mackovic and his disastrous tenure in Tucson made it to the third year.
They must've already had the sense that Jimmy L. was in over his head by a couple of weeks ago, and physically going after his own player like that (looking like an abusive dad going after his son) put the loaded gun in the AD's hands.
Looking back, it shouldn't be a surprise at all. The shove was reminiscent of Woody Hayes throwing that cheap shot punch at the Clemson player. That got Hayes fired, and he was a legend there already (and he hadn't recently lost at home to Montana).
