I think ASU advanced everybody’s class after last year’s 4 game season, even though the short season qualified as a red shirt year for everybody. The only thing I can figure is ASU wanted to hold the option of granting or withholding scholarships. The NCAA COVID regs basically created a big double freshmen class without offering any relief from the 85 max. And the NCAA stated that it created an extra season of eligibility but not the obligation for schools to incur the cost of additional scholarship aid.

I know that not all the players on the ASU site are on scholarship. But with 48 freshmen designations and 36 soph/junior, ASU will be hard pressed to use its annual 25 scholarships. Edwards may place some kids on waivers or demote them to walk-ons. Most school will face the same dilemma. One recruiting article I read predicted the thousands of kids hitting the transfer portal will be the focus of most college recruiting. It also stated that HS recruits will ultimately be the victims of the NCAA actions.
