Losing AP is a big hit, even if he deserves to go. He has done a pretty good job building this defense, sans the blatant recruiting violations. But shouldn't there have been more oversight of the recruiting process on his behalf? I remember them saying that Edwards was hired as something of a CEO. Isn't it, therefore, his responsibility to oversee these recruiting activities. Didn't he "apparently" meet with some of these recruits during the dead period? If so, how could he not have known this was going on? And if he didn't realize that these meetings were forbidden, that is also a problem because he should have. Also, the investigation could take more months to resolve. If this is left hanging, players won't be able to be sure who will be their coaches.
I really like Herm. But this was a major screw up in an operation he was in charge of. And his potential involvement (meeting with recruits during dead period), if true, seems to make it really difficult for him to claim ignorance or for the university to retain him.
I think Crowe values ethics more than wins. For these reasons I wouldn't want to bet on Herm remaining at this point. It might be possible to elevate Marvin Lewis if necessary and that might help preserve some continuity. He might not be interested, however.
