I think what you're missing is the contentious way the original poster phrased his comments. Maybe he's that abrassive in real life or maybe he's like a few too many on an anonymous internet who feel they have no reason to show tact among anonymous posters. Doesn't matter.
The bottom line is when people express their opinions that abrassively, they're going to become magnets for strong responses.
So really, it wasn't his opinion that elicited these responses. It was his manner. He's never going to have an enjoyable time on message boards if he doesn't get that.
