I'll take the athletic department at its word and believe it was budget-motivated. But I'm sure Title IX remains a consideration, especially because most women's sports have a higher scholarship limit than their men's counterparts. For example, women's basketball has 15 scholarships, men's has 13. Golf is 6 to 4.5. If they cut women's soccer, ASU women would have 14 fewer scholarships available. Cutting men's tennis only means 4.5 fewer scholarships are available to ASU men.
