What you're saying has a lot of truth behind it. ASU is only a creation with in the last 50 yrs. There's not a long line of nationally recognized alumni, educators or very highly ranked programs. The situation at ASU actually mirrors the city of Phoenix. Up until the 70's Phoenix was a stop over on your way from Calif to somewhere else. You don't become a major player with only 50 yrs of history. ASU will never be able to compete with Stanford, SC, UCLA or Berserkley. The mandate for the school is different. What needs to be done is to continue to keep the profile of the school at a high level, strive to raise the academic reputation even higher, and make the alumni feel part of the University even after graduation. The latter can only be accomplished with greater effort by the various alumni organizations in each of the 50 states.
