Jamaar Jarrett has Samson Szakacsy on the run in Saturday scrimmage.
In an oppressive, heat shortened Saturday scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium, the Sun Devils managed to get in some valuable work. Both offense and defense had their moments, but the play calling tended to be on the vanilla side.
There was no clear cut winner in the QB competion with Steven Threet getting off to a fast start and Brock Osweiler finishing up with a big drive capped by a TD strike to Kerry Taylor in the corner of the south end zone. Some of the newcomers like JC WR Mike Willie along with freshmen Deantre Lewis and Junior Onyeali are starting to make noticeable contributions and if nothing else will add some much need depth on both sides of the ball.

Dimitri Nance scores the lone offensive TD on the night.
A heroic performance by the ASU defense was not enough Saturday as the Devils lost at final gun 20-17. The tenacious "D" forced Georgia into 3 turnovers and had the Bulldogs on the ropes before A.J. Green blocked a FG attempt late in the 4th quarter.
Dimitri Nance finished the night with 92 yards and scored the lone Sun Devil offensive TD on the night. Nance was the only bright spot on offense, though, as the Devils repeatedly failed to execute when it counted. Especially in the passing game. QB Danny Sullivan finished 10 of 32 for 116 yards. He had the one TD to Nance and also threw one interception. On defense, Jarrell Holman had two huge picks and the defense again proved stout against the ranked Bulldogs, holding them to just 92 yards rushing on 31 carries. ASU now faces Oregon State next Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium.

Guy and Goethel put the stops to ULM offense.
The Sun Devil defense showed up big for the second consecutive week, rolling to a 38-7 3rd quarter lead. Louisiana-Monroe scored with a little over a minute remaining to make the final score 38-14.
Omar Bolden returned the opening kickoff 89 yards and intercepted a ULM pass at the goal line while Travis Goethel added an interception and a fumble recovery for the defense. On offense, Danny Sullivan finished 19-31 for 220 yards and a TD on the night. RB Dimitri Nance had 17 carries for 82 yards and 2 TD's and receiver Kyle Williams had a big night with 8 catches for 129 yards. ASU travels to Georgia next Saturday for an evening faceoff with the #17 ranked Bulldogs.

Shaun DeWitty rolls against Idaho State.
ASU rolled out a stifling defense Saturday night as they crushed Idaho State 50-3 in their 2009 season opener. The Bengals lone score came on a 55 yard FG late in the 3rd quarter.
Mike Nixon led the defensive onslaught with 3 int's and a blocked punt. On the night, the defense surrendered just 37 yards of total offense and -5 rushing yards. The ASU offense, on the other hand, showed good balance posting 199 rushing yards to go along with their 208 passing finishing with 407 total yards. The Devils get next week off before facing Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 19th at Sun Devil Stadium.

Spring football finally arrives
in the valley...
Coach
Olson gets things cranked up on day one.
On a beautiful, mid-seventies, day in Tempe, spring football finally got rolling for the Sun Devils. With a new coach, Bryce Erickson (RB's), and four new faces already on the field, Deleone, Lewis, Osweiler and Tucker, ASU would like to wipe away the stinging taste of a 5-7 season in year two under head coach Dennis Erickson.
The talent is here, with two strong recruiting class under their belt, to rejoin the upper division of the Pac-10. Spring ball will run through April 18th this year, ending with the annual spring game in Sun Devil Stadium.

Devils take out Southern Illinois,
move on to face Florida...
Derek
Glasser pushes the ball upcourt against SIU.
Arizona State (21-12) stormed back from a 7-0 deficit to open the game and took control in the second half to best the Southern Illinois Salukis 65-51. The Devils defense came through again, holding SIU to 29% from the field and just 26% behind the arc. Jeff Pendergraph had a huge night with 12 points, ten rebounds and eight blocked shots. James Harden and Ty Abbott also scored in double digits for the Sun Devils. ASU now waits to meet Florida Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Colorado safety MATT TUCKER first
commit for 2009 class...
Grandview
safety MATT TUCKER
Arizona State picked up their first commit of the 2009 class today in safety MATT TUCKER (6-2, 190) from Grandview HS in Aurora, CO. Tucker was a defensive leader for the Wolves who won the Colorado 5A Championship last year. He also stepped in at QB for the Wolves in their quarterfinal game vs. Heritage and ran for two TD's while throwing for another. Tucker is big, athletic and always seems to be around the ball. He finished the season with five INT's and two fumble recoveries. This is a nice start to the class of 2009.
Devils open post season play
vs. Alabama State Hornets...
Jerren
Shipp vs. USC
Arizona State (19-12) takes on a veteran Alabama State (20-10) team tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. The Hornets, regular season champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, held their opponents to just 40% shooting on the year and boast a big (7-1, 265) man in the middle, Chief Kickingstallionsims. Junior guard Andrew Hayles leads the Hornets in scoring, with a 14.6 average.

Erickson reels in FIVE commits
this weekend...
ASU hauled in five new commitments over the weekend, including three from Corona Centennial HS in Southern California's Inland Empire region. RB RYAN BASS, LB BRANDON MAGEE and LB SHELLY LYONS are the three Centennial stars that helped lead the Huskies to the Division I Championship game vs. Concord De La Salle. Bass comes in as the most highly touted of the group, having run for 2,608 yards and 47 TD's this season. Two sport star Magee finished with 86 tackles, 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries while missing the last three games. Finally, Lyons capped off a great senior year with 101 tackles, five sacks, two Int's and a fumble recovery.
The Sun Devils also picked up key commitments from DT OTIS JONES from Leuzinger HS in Lawndale, CA and TE TOA TUITEA from Westminster, CA. Jones is a 6-1, 280 lineman who plays with good speed and agility on the inside. Tuitea excelled at DE for Westminster the past two years but is expected to start out at TE for the Devils.

Arizona State 64 - Arizona 59...
James
Harden comes up BIG in the second half.
Freshman James Harden scored 22 of his game high 26 points in the second half as ASU rallied to beat the Wildcats 64-59 in OT. The Sun Devils trailed 28-21 at the half after shooting only 33% from the field. Behind Harden and Jeff Pendergraph, ASU warmed up in the second half and overtime, outscoring Arizona 43-31 and shooting 45% after the break. The Sun Devils notched their ninth straight win in front of a packed house (13,947) at Wells Fargo Arena. With the win, ASU improved it's record to 13-2 and a perfect 3-0 in the Pac-10. The Devils travel to the Bay Area on the 17th to take on Cal and Stanford as they continue conference play.

Jamelle
McMillan "D's up" against Oregon State.
James Harden finished with a team high 24 points and Jeff Pendergraph chipped in with 18 points, 9 rebounds and four big blocked shots as ASU hammered the Beavers 72-53 Saturday afternoon. The Sun Devils moved to 12-2 on the year and swept the Oregon schools on the opening weekend of Pac-10 play.

at Army All-American game...
Gerrell
Robinson throws up the pitchfork for Devil fans!
In front of a national audience Saturday, Hamilton's Gerrell Robinson announced his commitment to Arizona State. At the Army All-American game in San Antonio, Gerrell chose ASU over Notre Dame and Oregon much to the dismay of a very pro Irish crew of annoucers and analysts. Despite being recruited as a WR by ASU and being an offensive standout at QB and WR this year for the Hamilton Huskies...Gerrell played Safety for the West team along side future Sun Devil teammate DL Lawrence Guy.

PG Derek Glasser came up big versus Oregon Thursday night contributing 10 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and three steals in the Devils 62-54 victory. Jeff Pendergraph added 17 points while freshman James Harden scored 20 and grabbed 7 rebounds. This was the Pac-10 opener for both teams and the Sun Devils move to 11-2 on the season while Oregon falls to 9-4 on the year.

ASU can't run on Texas, falls
52-34 in Holiday Bowl...
Dimitri
Nance works for extra yards against Texas defense.
The Sun Devils again rolled out their conservative, ground control offense against one of the top run defenses in the country. Again the Sun Devils were beaten down, unable to pound the ball on the Longhorns and losing 52-34 in the process. ASU averaged 0.8 yards per carry, curiously running into the teeth of a Texas defense that was ranked 10th in the country against the run while ranking 109th vs. the pass. Again ASU dug themselves a first quarter hole (21-0). This time they couldn't dig their way out of it.
Texas moved the ball effectively all night, with 300 yards coming on the ground and 115 of that coming from the QB spot. The Longhorns finshed with 474 total yards to 327 for the Devils. Chris McGaha did come up with his first TD of the season on a sweet one handed catch while Danny Sullivan's 4th quarter performance was the other bright spot for Devils. Sullivan came in and threw for 118 yards and a TD in the most impressive performance of his young Sun Devil career.

Sun Devils beat Cats again for
10th win...
Chris
McGaha with an amazing catch at the one.
With a third straight win over Arizona, ASU picked up their 10th win of the season and will head to the Holliday Bowl to face Texas (9-3) on Dec. 27th. The Sun Devil receivers came up big in this game, especially Chris McGaha who had a spectacular grab at the goal line and finished with six catches for 83 yards. ASU's defense held the Wildcats to just 44 yards on 19 carries and held the Cats to three points through the last three quarters until the last 26 seconds of the game. Dexter Davis had two sacks and the Sun Devil defense picked off two Willie Tuitama passes to get the seventh win in the last nine games against UofA.

Jones hauls in the TD pass.

Luis
Vasquez grabs SC WR David Ausberry.
USC's Trojans used a short passing game to breakdown the Sun Devil defense and run away from the Devils in front of a packed house and national TV audience on Thanksgiving. SC racked up 375 yards through the air, much of it on yards after the catch, in dominating the game. ASU continued it's conservative approach on offense, wanting to control the clock, but they managed just 16 yards on 35 carries. Carpenter did finish 22-31 for 243 yards but only managed one TD as ASU was forced to throw to catch up. The trojans finished the night with 508 yards of offense compared to just 259 for the Devils.

Dimitri
Nance breaks loose against UCLA.
Surviving two huge kick returns by the Bruin special teams...ASU ground out a 24-20 road win over UCLA. RB Keegan Herring had 116 yards on 22 carries to lead the Devils. It was a total team effort on defense with Dexter Davis leading the way with two sacks. The Sun Devils moved to 9-1 on the season and more importantly, 6-1 in the Pac-10.

Colorado OL Andrew Sampson is
a Sun Devil...
Overland
lineman ANDREW SAMPSON makes a late night commitment.
Colorado OL ANDREW SAMPSON decided to make a late night call to Coach Lubick after watching the ASU-Cal game. "I watched the game and I was sure that ASU is the place I want to be. It was a great win and that was important but I had actually been trying to reach Coach Lubick earlier in the day to let him know. After the game, I just said why wait...I know what I want to do so I called him," stated Sampson. "He was surprised but the coaches sounded pretty happy that I was onboard," Sampson added.
Sun Devils take down Cal Bears,
31-20 on Homecoming...
Josh
Barrett hauls down Cal RB Justin Forsett.
ASU continued a disturbing trend of not showing up for the first quarter of play this season and found themselves trailing the Cal Bears 13-0 after the first 15 minutes. The Sun Devils managed to right the ship in the second quarter and outscored the Bears 31-7 over the last three quarters. Dimitri Nance ran for three TD's and combined with Keegan Herring for 181 yards on the ground. ASU, despite the slow start, controlled the clock. The Devils maintained possesion for an incredible 37 and a half minutes in the game. The defense held the Cal running game under 100 yards and had two key picks off QB Nate Longshore in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. ASU moves to 8-0 with the homecoming win.

QB Jack Elway commits to Arizona
State...
Jack
Elway leads Creek up to the line vs. Eaglecrest.
After leading his Cherry Creek Bruins to a 37-14 win over Eaglecrest Friday, QB JACK ELWAY gave ASU Coach Matt Lubick his commitment to play football for the Sun Devils next season. Elway who's having a great senior season, chose ASU over offers from Oregon and LSU among others. He stated he liked the idea of playing for Coach Erickson who coached on his grandfather's staff at San Jose State. "After my visit to Tempe I was convinced that ASU is the place for me. I loved the coaches, especially Coach Erickson and his offensive philosophy, and I really like that ASU is close to home in Colorado but still gives me the chance to get away and play football in the Pac-10."

Washington 44-20...
Kyle
Williams and Chris McGaha celebrate Williams' TD catch.
Riding another second half surge, the Sun Devils put away Washington and remained undefeated on the season. After losing RB Ryan Torain in the first half...Keegan Herring and Dimitri Nance finshed the game strong for the Devils. The two combined for 211 yards, including a 57 yard TD romp for Nance followed by an electrifying 76 yard bolt by Herring. Rudy Carpenter finished the night 20-31 for 227 yards and 2 TD's. ASU's defense again stepped up in the second half holding Jake Locker and the Huskies to a FG.

ASU wins big at Stanford, 41-3...
Scoreboard
tells the story.
Coach Erickson and his Sun Devils took care of that Pac-10 losing streak in California, Saturday, dominating Stanford 41-3. The scoreboard tells the story in this one as ASU held the Cardinal to -2 yards rushing and just 235 toal yards for the game. Ryan Torain had 16 carries for 106 yards and three TD's. QB Rudy Carpenter finished 20-27 for 259 yards as the Devils rolled up 440 yards and controlled the ball almost 35 minutes in the victory. Robert James had 11 tackles while Dexter Davis came up big with two and a half sacks to lead the defense. The win moves ASU to 2-0 in the Pac-10.

Ryan
Torain heads to the end zone.
For this second time this season, ASU suffered through a dismal first quarter, trailing 19-0, only to storm back and win going away. This time it was the Pac-10 opener vs. Oregon State. The Sun Devils gave up a safety on their opening posession after a high snap sailed over the punter's head and out of the endzone. The Beavers took the following kickoff and marched down for a TD, then picked off Rudy Carpenter deep in ASU territory scoring in three plays and found themselves up 16-0 just minutes into the game.
After the first quarter, it looked like a completely different Sun Devil team on the field. They scored 44 points in the last three quarters. Carpenter threw for 361 yards and four TD's while the defense picked off OSU QB Sean Canfield five times in the comeback win. Morris Wooten and Robert James, the Maryvale connection, combined for 19 tackles.

ASU moves to 3-0 with win over
San Diego State...
Jeremy
Payton and Troy Nolan put the crunch on SDSU.
ASU finished off a perfect (3-0) non-conference schedule with a 34-13 pounding of San Diego State. The Devils controlled the game throughout and ran for 268 yards against the Aztecs. With starter Ryan Torain on the sidelines, Keegan Herring and Dimitri Nance combined for 30 carries and 219 yards in the win. QB Rudy Carpenter was 16-22 for 211 yards and had TD's passes to Kyle Williams and Rudy Burgess.
The Sun Devil defense had another strong showing and limited SDSU to
a 50 yard FG in the second half. Robert James continues to lead
the defensive effort and finished with 11 tackles on the night. Morris
Wooten and Troy Nolan also had big nights for the ASU defense.

Robert
James with another big stop.
The Sun Devils got out of the gate slowly against the Buffs and found themselves trailing 14-0 after the first quarter. Less than a minute into the game, CU cornerback Terrence Wheatley picked off a Rudy Carpenter pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Another ASU turnover led to a 10 yard Cody Hawkins TD pass. Colorado 14 - ASU 0. From that point on, however, the Sun Devil defense took charge and shut out the Buffs...holding them to just 204 total yards.
Robert James led the defensive effort with 9 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and a sack. Carpenter threw for 269 yards and three TD's, two to Mike Jones and one to Kyle Williams. RB Ryan Torain finished the night with 17 carries for 91 yards and a TD.

Chris
McGaha gets up to make the grab vs. San Jose St.
With RB Ryan Torain and QB Rudy Carpenter leading the way...ASU throttled the San Jose State Spartans saturday night 45-3 before a crowd of 54,405. Torain had three TD's and rushed for 123 yards on 17 carries while Carpenter was 14 of 20 for 197 yards and threw for two TD's before leaving the game early in the third quarter. The Sun devils built a commanding 31-3 lead by halftime and scored on five of their first six possessions. The Devils amassed 33 first downs and 520 total yards while limiting the Spartans to just seven first downs and 115 total yards.
It was nice to see LB Robert James back out on the field and he didn't disappoint. James had 10 tackles, an interception and a sack while harrassing Spartan QB Adam Tafralis all night long. Backup QB Danny Sullivan got some valuable playing time and made the best of it. Sullivan completed 9 of 12 passes for 73 yards and his first TD pass as a Sun Devil. Freshman Kerry Taylor also had a good showing in his first game at ASU. Taylor had three catches for 21 yards and made a beautiful catch in the back of the endzone for his first Sun Devil TD. Both sides of the ball performed extremely well for a season opener and the backups got plenty of playing time in the second half. That may serve the Devils well as they prepare to face the Colorado Buffaloes next saturday at Sun Devil Stadium.

Centennial OL ZACH SCHLINK commits
to ASU...
Centennial's
ZACH SCHLINK as Coyotes take 5A Div II Championship in 2006.
All-Arizona lineman ZACH SCHLINK made the phone call this afternoon. It was a call that had ASU head coach Dennis Erickson smiling from ear to ear. Schlink simply announced, "Coach, I'm going to be a Sun Devil." With that news, ASU's recruiting class for 2008 took a huge jump forward. Schlink joins Hamilton's Patrick Jamison as a cornerstone to the Sun Devil's recruiting class this year. Both are national recruits at the OL position. A position that is key considering the numbers ASU will lose in 2007 to graduation.
Schlink stated, "Despite all the offers, it really boiled down to staying close to home. Ultimately, it was ASU or UofA. I hated to call Coach Kish a give him my decision, but I really wanted to be a Sun Devil and play for Coach Erickson." "Both schools treated us great during the whole process, and Coach Kish said I'm not giving up on you yet...but I'm really excited about what's going on over at ASU with this coaching staff and they made it known early on they wanted me to be a part of it, " Zach offered. "I'm happy to get this out of the way, though, so I can concentrate on football from here on out, " Schlink said, obviously relieved to be done with this part of the process. With Schlink's commitment, ASU now has verbals from four of the top players in the state.

On a beautiful sun drenched field, before 3,000 to 4,000 Sun Devil fans, the Defense re-established itself and dominated Saturday's scrimmage at Camp Tontozona. The defense came out early and played with an intensity that the offense had trouble matching till too late in the contest. This year's defense is much more physical in their play and layed some big hits on the "O" Saturday. LB Robert James appears to be all the way back and is running down plays all over the field. Score one for the "D" in this first scrimmage.

Erickson gets offense ready for practice
Sunday night's practice started out very humid and turned to a good
steady rain for about an hour or so. Things finally cleared up for the
last 20-30 minutes. The rain was welcome and served to cool things off
dramatically for the last half of practice. Overall it was a very

Fall Camp underway in Tempe...
Offense
warms up for first Fall practice
The rain stayed away and ASU's first fall camp under Coach Erickson kicked off under sunny skies in Tempe. WR Nate Kimbrough, LB Robert James and RB Shaun DeWitty all appeared to be healthy and ready to go this season. It was also great to see Zach Krula out there again leading the OL throughout the evening. Some of the newcomers that impressed on day one included CB Omar Bolden, DE James Brooks (6-4, 271), QB's Samson Szakacsy and Chasen Stangel along with WR's Kerry Taylor and T.J. Simpson. As everyone settles in with the new offensive and defensive schemes...the RB's and WR's seemed to have a particularly good showing as a group on Day One.

Desert
Vista's ZEB TOGIAI at ASU Camp
ASU picked up their second commit of the day and third of the year when Desert Vista defensive lineman ZEB TOGIAI (6-3, 260) called Coach Erickson and told him he wanted to be a Sun Devil. Zeb and his brother had visited ASU on Friday and almost committed then. He decided to take the weekend to think things over. Togiai wanted to go back over to ASU and give them his commitment today but he picked up a bad cold over the weekend and had to call to give Erickson the news.
Zeb played last year at Mountain Pointe but he's excited to be playing along side DEVON KENNARD at Desert Vista this season. Togiai said he really hit it off well with Coach Stretz at the ASU Camp and especially liked the way Stretz was teaching him during the camp. "He was calm but still quite strong in getting his point across to you",said Togiai. "We kept in close contact after the camp and when I got the offer last week, I pretty much knew what I wanted to do." Togiai added, " I want to major in Business, and ASU has a strong Business school so it's really a good fit for me all the way around."
Togiai, also had offers from Washington State, San Diego State and Arizona.
Las Vegas CB JOSH JORDAN is a
Sun Devil...
JOSH
JORDAN CB Bishop Gorman
The Sun Devils received their second commit of the year in CB JOSH JORDAN from Las Vegas. Jordan pictured above at ASU's One Day Camp, called Coach Erickson today and gave him the good news. Jordan chose Arizona State over offers from Oregon, Stanford, San Diego State and UNLV. Earlier today Josh told Greg Biggins from Student Sports that he knew ASU was the place he wanted to be but he may wait till later this summer to make it official. Well, just about an hour later, he called back and announced he was a Sun Devil. He had just called Coach Erickson and gave him the good news.
Talking to Jordan tonight, he stated, "I always liked ASU and it felt especially right to me when I was down there for the camp. Coach Erickson, Coach Cozzetto who is recruiting me and Coach Simmons my position coach are all great guys and they were straight shooters with me. They answered all my questions and didn't hold back anything when they were telling me what would be expected of me if I wanted to be a Sun Devil." Josh went on to add, "I think I can really flourish under Coach Simmons. He's a good teacher and I've always played very aggressive...I think they like that I take it right to the edge playing CB."
Jordan was named the DB's MVP at the Stanford Nike camp in May.

Dennis Erickson tabbed as new
Arizona State head coach...
Dennis
Erickson to lead Sun Devil football
At a Monday press conference, AD Lisa Love introduced her choice to lead the Arizona State football program, Dennis Erickson. ASU will be Erickson's seventh stop in his collegiate career and he has also coached the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49'ers at the NFL level. Erickson has put together a stellar record coaching at the collegiate level, amassing a 148-65-1 record and two national championships over 18 years. After beginning his coaching career at Idaho and Wyoming, Erickson then led Washington State to their first bowl game since 1931 before heading to Miami. At Miami, Erickson took the helm from Jimmy Johnson in 1989 and over six seasons put together an unbelievable 63-9 record topped of by national championships in '89 and '91. Erickson also coached four years at Oregon State, highlighted by an 11-1 season in 2000 where the Beavers trounced Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl. Sporting News also named Erickson their National Coach of the Year in 2000.
On Monday, Erickson announced two coaches that will be part of his new staff. Dan Cozzetto will follow him from the Idaho staff and Al Simmons from the current staff will remain with him here at ASU. Finally, Erickson said you can expect his teams to play with passion and be very physical. As far as recruiting is concerned, the first priority will be the mid-year JC transfers who can sign on Dec. 20th. Erickson plans to meet with the current staff and discuss the priorities and who has been offered, immediately, so they can get on top of that situation.
Derron
Ware and Kyle Caldwell close on Arizona QB
In Coach Dirk Koetter's last game at Arizona State, the Sun Devils dominated the Wildcats from start to finish. ASU jumped out early on a 26 yard scoring strike from RUDY CARPENTER to CHRIS McGAHA...then closed the 1st Quarter with two quick scores by JAMAAL LEWIS and ZACH MILLER to grab a commanding 21-0 lead. DIMITRI NANCE closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter on a one yard plunge. The Devils finished the day with 23 first downs and 429 yards of offense (215 rushing and 214 passing) while limiting the Cats to just 168 total yards, 33 on the ground. BILL MILLER's defense was stellar all day, coming up with 2 sacks and 2 interceptions while limiting Arizona to a measly 1.4 yards per carry. Arizona State now will prepare for the Hawaii Bowl Dec. 24th vs. the University of Hawaii. Aloha.

ASU scores first then gets rolled
49-21 at Cal...
Sun
Devils take a 7-0 lead on opening drive.
Arizona State got off to a great start Saturday, driving 76 yards in 12 plays to grab a 7-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, the Sun Devils passing game began to implode and the Cal Bears walked out to a commanding 42-14 halftime lead. The lone bright spot coming out of Berkeley was the emergence of the running game with RYAN TORAIN carrying the load. Torain finished the game with 24 carries for 191 yards and two TD's. RUDY CARPENTER had by far his worst showing as a Sun Devil. Carpenter, who led the nation last year in passing efficiency, finished 16 of 36 for 177 yards and four Int's. A crucial fumble also led to a quick Cal score, breaking a 7-7 tie in the first quarter.
The Sun Devils actually out rushed Marshawn Lynch and the vaunted Cal running attack, 237 yards to 139 but Cal QB Nate Longshore picked up the slack going 18-26 for 270 yards and four TD's. Longshore was on the money all day long and the ASU defense, who entered the game leading the nation with 18 sacks, could not get any pressure on Longshore. They finished the day with one late sack by MICHAEL MARQUARDT.
Arizona State, now 3-1 on the year, will face Oregon at home next Saturday on ABC.
Devils move to 3-0, leave Boulder
with 21-3 victory...
On a night where ASU had racked up 18 first downs and close to 300
yards offense at halftime, with only 14 points to show for it, the Sun
Devil defense took control of the game bringing home a 21-3 road win. It
was a cool, windy evening in Boulder, Colorado and the Sun Devils controlled
the game, throughout, but had major problems finding the end zone. ZACH
MILLER's one handed grab for a TD, late in the 4th quarter, finally
gave the Sun Devils a little breathing room and they coasted in for an
18 point win.
As mentioned, the defense was the key to this game...holding the Buffs to just 219 yards total offense and causing three turnovers. They also added five more sacks, bringing their total to 18 on the year. Outside of a few broken play scrambles by CU quarterback Bernard Jackson and a couple of long runs by RB Hugh Charles, The Devils defense dominated the game. ASU needed all that defense as their normally potent offense struggled all night and turned the ball over four times. If it wasn't Carpenter looking to be out of sync on many of his throws, it was wide open receivers dropping the ball...putting an ugly finish on a much needed road win. The Devils will have plenty to work on as they head into Berkeley next week.

Fall Camp gets off to strong
start...
Coach
Stretz and D-Line get to work.
ASU's 2006 Fall Camp opened on a beautiful Friday night in Tempe. The newcomers jumped right in this year and started practice along side the veterans. They got their extra work in at the end of practice and that seemed to work out nicely as they had a little better handle on things after watching the vets get right down to business. The team looked to be in great shape and ready to compete right from the opening drill. The D-Line was quite impressive for a Day One workout while the linebacking corps was full of new faces but also some big, athletic bodies. There will be some major competition for those three linebacker positions in this camp.
The offense seemed to pick up right where they left off last year. Guess that should be expected, though, when you have two QB's like Keller and Carpenter leading the way. At first glance, guys like Ryan McFoy, Dimitri Nance, Lance Evbuomwan and the linebacking group of Jamarr Robinson, Gerald Munns, Travis Goethel, Jeff Bereuter and Garrett Judah really grab your attention. However, it was very apparent by the end of the night that this is a strong recruiting class the Sun Devils brought in and there will be some major contributors from this group before it's all said and done. Can't wait till they get the pads on!

Hamilton's KERRY TAYLOR commits...
WR
Kerry Taylor
KERRY TAYLOR became the second Hamilton Husky to follow former Coach John Wrenn to Arizona State. Taylor joins teammate COLIN PARKER as early ASU verbals and Kerry is the fourth Sun Devil commitment of the 2007 Recruiting Class. Taylor just returned from USC's Rising Senior Camp saying it really came down to ASU and SC at the end. "Those two seemed to be recruiting me hardest, " said Taylor who had previously listed ASU, SC and Cal as his top three. "I get along with the ASU coaches real well and that offense was the key...you're going to get the chance to make plays as a receiver."
"The opportunity was just best for me at ASU as far as potential playing time and plus I'll be able to stay here and play in front of my family and friends," offered Taylor. Kerry's family includes father Keith and uncle John who both enjoyed long NFL careers. Taylor also had offers from Cal, Washington State, Oregon State San Diego State and Boise State.

EVERSON GRIFFEN and MARCEL JONES were there representing their teams in the Big Man Competition, while KERRY TAYLOR had a great night for Hamilton in the passing tournament. COLIN PARKER looks like his knee injury from last year has come around nicely and both RIDGE and RILEY NIELSEN had a strong night for Mountain View.

Texas safety Jonathan Clark is a Sun Devil...
Just got off the phone with ASU's third commit for this year...JOHN CLARK (6-2, 180) S from Seguin HS in Arlington, TX. Coach Wrenn was the one recruiting Clark. Yesterday John decided to go ahead and call ASU with his commitment. He spoke to both Wrenn and Coach Koetter and said they were pretty excited about his decision. Clark said, "I've got family out there and that was one of the big reasons I chose ASU over Wisconsin and a few other schools, but it was mainly down to ASU and Wisconsin lately." John plans to make it out to Tempe soon to meet with the coaches and get familiar with the campus. "My coaches here told me ASU is a great school and I'll really like it out there...so I'm definitely looking forward to getting out there as soon as possible." Clark had 63 tackles and five interception last year for Seguin who finished 9-3 on the year.

NICK FOLES 6-5, 250 (Austin Westlake) is the Sun Devils second
commit for 2007. Foles has already visited Tempe and plans to attend ASU's
camp next month. Nick threw for 2,350 yards and had 30 total TD's with
just 6 int's...completing 110 of 201 passes on the season. Foles was named
1st Team All-District, Honorable Mention All-CENTEX and All-Junior in Class
5A by Texas Football.com. Foles chose ASU over early offers from UTEP,
Mississippi and Duke. At the A&M Nike Camp, Foles posted a 28" vertical
and did 21 reps on the bench. ASU, Ol' Miss and Cal were the only schools
he listed as favorites.
HERB SENDEK new ASU Basketball
coach...
Former
NC State coach Herb Sendek
Arizona State picked up some great national publicity Saturday when CBS's Seth Davis announced, between games at the Final Four, that Herb Sendek had accepted the head Basketball job at ASU. Sendek, who turned 43 just ten days ago, was said to be unhappy with the recent criticism from Wolfpack fans despite posting a 22-10 record this season and taking the team to it's 5th straight NCAA Tournament. Sendek comes to ASU with a reputation as a good recruiter and a solid tactician on the bench.

Spring Football 2006 underway...
Sam
Keller under center at Monday's first practice.
On a sunny, but slightly cool and breezy Monday afternoon, Spring football got underway at ASU. With four new coaches on staff, the curiosity level was high for the fans at practice number one. Practices are still closed, except for those who are cleared through the football office. SAM KELLER looked to be in great shape and threw the ball very well for his first time out . He appears to be fully recovered from last year's injuries. Also, the running back tandem of KEEGAN HERRING and SHAUN DEWITTY looked strong. They were both moving much better than at the end of last year. Keegan definitely had that burst again and Shaun has gotten bigger but seems to carry it very well. At TE it's nice to finally see DANE GUTHRIE as part of the mix on offense. Dane is a big body who can block but he has deceptive speed and can get downfield nicely for for a big man.
On defense, everybody will be watching the linebackers and corners this spring. ROBERT JAMES has looked good in the first two practices and will have to assume more of a leadership role being the only returning starter at LB. RUDY BURGESS is working a lot at CB as well as getting reps on offense. With KENO WALTER-WHITE sitting out for now, Rudy should get a lot of work along with JC transfers JUSTIN TRYON and CHRIS BALONEY as well as redshirt freshman GRANT CRUNKLETON. Finally it's quite a bonus to have a 22 year old freshman walkon, that's a former AZ player of the year, like MIKE NIXON join your team for spring ball. By the time fall rolls around, expect Mike to be a big contributor on this defense both on and off the field.

Vista LB TRAVIS GOETHEL commits...
Travis
Goethel at SC Nike Camp
Vista LB TRAVIS GOETHEL committed earlier tonight after
a home meeting with Coach Koetter and Coach Fidler. "I really knew where
I wanted to go after this weekend, but I needed to come home and talk things
over with my family. The meeting today sealed the deal.
THOMAS ALTIERI,
my former teammate, was my host over at ASU and I loved the whole visit
but the one thing that really stood out was the way they handle the academic
side. It was very impressive," added Goethel.
Travis said ASU is looking at him to play the Sam linebacker spot for now and he's going to try and get over to Tempe this summer to workout early with the team. Goethel chose the Sun Devils over his other two finalists, Washington and Utah.
Santa Rosa DT MARTIN TEVASEU is a Sun Devil...
MARTIN TEVASEU is a Sun Devil!! Tevaseu (6-3, 290) loved his visit this weekend and wanted to make sure I gave props to guys like Jean Boyd, Coach Kenn, and his host Will Kofe, for making him feel a part of the Sun Devil family and making his decision much easier. "I just knew ASU was the place for me when I left there today," offered Tevaseu. "I really like Coach Monachino and Coach Koetter, and they were great about going over all the academic stuff and how I fit into their plans defensively," Martin continued. "It was just perfect." Tevaseu said he's looking forward to working with Coach Kenn and being prepared to contribute this fall for the Devils. Tevaseu chose the Sun Devils over offers from Colorado, BYU, Boise State and Louisville. Tevaseu, a qualifier out of high school, still has four years to play three.
ANGELO RICHARDSON commits to
ASU...
WR
Angelo
Richardson
Just spoke to Santa Rosa JC WR ANGELO RICHARDSON and he told
me that he called the ASU coaches today and gave them his commitment to
be a Sun Devil next season.
Richardson said, "I'm glad to get this out of the way...the whole (recruiting)
process was starting to wear on me and my family. There were a number
of schools trying to get involved late, but ASU was there from the begining
and had shown me the most love throughout the year. It really just came
down to ASU and SC, but I think ASU is the best fit for me." Angelo
played with Sam Keller for one year in high school and said that was definitely
was a factor, but added, "ASU is going to need someone to step in
for D-Hag next year...I want to be that guy."
This is a big pickup for the Devils as they head down the stretch.
Devils grind out a 23-20 win
over Arizona...
With the score tied at 20...ASU took possession of the ball
at the 4:59 mark of the fourth quarter. They never gave it up, as JESSE
AINSWORTH kicked the game winning field goal with :08 remaining to
give the Sun Devils a 23-20 win over the rival Wildcats. Even though they
held a 5-3 lead after the first quarter and led in total yards...the
Devils were out of sync for most of the first half.
Arizona stepped up in the second quarter and put together two good scoring drives to take a 17-5 lead at the half. Whatever was said in the locker room, though, seemed to have a huge effect on the Devils as they came out a different team in the second half. They held Arizona to just three points while scoring 18 themselves. RUDY BURGESS had a big seven yard TD run midway through the third quarter to bring ASU back to 20-12. The real game changer, however, was TERRY RICHARDSON's 71 yard punt return for a TD with 7:52 remaing in the fourth quarter. After a two point conversion, the game was tied at 20. The Sun Devils stopped Arizona on their next possession and took over at their own 20. ASU held the ball the rest of the way with BURGESS leading the way on the ground. The Devils drove to the Arizona one yard line before running out the clock and getting the ball right in the center of the field for AINSWORTH's 20 yard game winner.
After the victory, ASU accepted a bid to the Insight Bowl where they likely will face Rutgers of the Big East.

Interceptions, Trojan running
game undo Devils 38-28...
Arizona State got on the board first with a terrific 84 yard punt return
by Terry Richardson. That was the only scoring in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Devils outscored SC 14-3 (Jamaal Lewis
7 yd pass, Keegan Herring 5 yd run) enroute to a 21-3 halftime.
The defense came through with numerous third and fourth down stops to kill
SC drives in the first half. Only problem was, that ASU defense spent way
too much time on the field in the first half shutting down the Trojans.
That would come back to haunt them in the heat of the second half when
the turnovers started to add up against the Devils.
In the second half , USC went to the running game. Seeing that ASU had committed their safeties to stopping Leinart and the passing game in the first half (Leinart was 10 of 23 for 113 yds)...they went to work between the tackles with the lethal combo of White and Bush. The Trojans amassed 265 yards on the ground in that second half. ASU continued to move the ball on offense, but killed drive after drive with key turnovers. The key play of the game, though, could have been late in the 3rd quarter with ASU leading 21-17. They had the ball 1st and five at the 50 yard line. Lining up with trips on the left, Derek Hagan was uncovered. Keller tried to get him the ball but there seemed to be a breakdown in communication and the ball ended up right in the hands of a Trojan defender. Instead of a potentially huge play for the Devils...it ended up as a turnover and no points on that possesion.
ASU has proven they can play with anybody in the country. They now have to figure out how to close these kind of games out when they have the opportunity.

ASU scores big road win in Corvallis
42-24...
The Sun Devils scored on their third play from scrimmage (49 yard pass
from Keller to RB Rudy Burgess) then finished a sluggish first half on
top 14-3. Led by Keller and a defense that produced six turnovers in the
game, ASU struck swiftly in the 3rd quarter. In the first ten minutes
of the second half, ASU put 28 points on the scoreboard and led 42-10 with
5:15 to play in the 3rd. Sam Keller finished with his fourth straight
four TD game despite setting out the fouth quarter. Derek Hagan
also had a huge night for the Devils. Hagan had 11 catches for 193 yards
and scored two TD's.
On defense Jamar Williams was all over the field. Williams had 13 tackles, a forced fumble, a sack and an interception on the night. LB Robert James and CB Josh Golden also had interceptions while Keno Walter-White and Beau Manutai each forced a fumble. For the second straight week the Sun Devils were able to rest their starters in the fouth quarter. ASU ended up playing 62 players in the game.
Sun Devils get offensive in 52-21
win over Northwestern...
Bob
Kline/ Cactus Ranch
ASU's offense racked up a school record 773 yards Saturday night in
their win over Northwestern. Sam Keller continued to shine
as the leader of this offense. Keller hit 20 of 31 passes for 409 yards
and four TD's. The Devils also had 290 yards on the ground, led by Keegan
Herring who carried 23 times for 197 yards and scored two TD's. Ten
different receivers caught passes for the Sun Devils.
Safeties Josh Barrett, Jeremy Payton and Zach Catanese led the way for the Devils defense with a combined 22 tackles. ASU managed to hold a strong Northwestern offense to 21 points after taking a 45-14 lead into the fourth quarter. The Sun Devils were able to rest their starters in the 4th quarter, yielding some valuable playing time to backups like QB Rudy Carpenter.

LSU's comes back to nip Devils
35-31 in a thriller...
Bob
Kline/ Cactus Ranch
The LSU Tigers energized by two huge 4th quarter blocked kicks
they returned for TD's, rallied to beat the Sun Devils 35-31 at Sun Devil
Stadium Saturday night. The Tigers, after being held to seven points through
the first three quarters, exploded for 28 in the final 15 minutes to get
the victory. Sam Keller and the Sun Devil offense shredded the vaunted
LSU defense for 560 yards, but came up short when their final drive stalled
out on the LSU 28 yard line. Keller had a supurb game, going 35-56
for 461 yards and four TD's with no interceptions.
ASU's defense held JaMarcus Russell and the potent LSU offense to just 21 point on the night. That wasn't enough, however, as a blocked FG attempt to start the 4th quarter followed up by an LSU block of the ensuing punt swung momentum wildly towards LSU's side. The Sun Devils opened the quarter with a 17-7 leat and were looking to build on it when Jesse Ainsworth's 47 yard FG attempt was blocked. By the 13:27 mark of the 4th quarter, ASU found themselves trailing 21-17. A shootout ensued with ASU grabbing the tlead back twice down the stretch only to see LSU convert a fourth and ten at the 39 for a game winning score.
Dale Robinson again led a short handed Sun devil defense with 15 tackles, four for a loss and one sack of Russell. Zach Catanese also came up big with 12 tackles for the Devils. ASU now has to look forward to hosting the Northwestern Wildcats at Sun Devil Stadium next week.

Sun Devils blast Temple in opener
63-16...
On a night they weren't really clicking on a cylinders, ASU still
managed to rack up 559 yards and 63 points in a season opening rout of
Temple. QB Sam Keller started slowly but seemed to gain confidence
as the game went on. Keller ended up throwing for 208 yards and four TD's
but the bigger story may have been the 300 yards rushing for the Devils.
True freshman Keegan Herring was spectacular. His 134 yards broke
a long standing school record for most rushing yards in an ASU debut. That
record belonged to Woody Green who ran for 117 in his first game
as a Sun Devil.
Led by Dale Robinson, the defense did their part by limiting the Owls to just 62 yards on 35 carries. The Sun Devils were also able to play three deep on both sides of the ball as they prepared for next Saturday's big non-conference clash with #6 LSU in Baton Rouge.
