Los Angeles has hundreds of cougars living in the Santa Monica Mountains and the rolling hills north of the San Fernando Valley. Many have been outfitted with GPS devices. It’s amazing how these big cats cross through populated areas and freeways drain ways. Droughts have brought mule deer and coyotes into populated areas and the cats have followed their prey.
P-22 is believed to be the most urban mountain lion in Southern California. Experts say genetic testing shows he was probably born in the Santa Monica Mountains and then crossed the 405 and 101 freeways to make Griffith Park his home in 2012. He has been known to roam the LA Zoo at nights looking for late night snacks. There are also photos taken at family outings in the city parks that showed these cats peering though the brush.
