I lived in coastal Orange County for many years, and there were periodic cougar/mtn lion attacks of mtn bikers, hikers. I haven't heard of one in AZ for many years interestingly, even though we have them too.
It is fortunate we can arm ourselves in AZ on a remote hike if we wish. Not as easy in CA.
