J. Russell Nelson was famous for his statement that university athletics were either a school’s ornament - or it’s albatross. He had to keep them alive to appease the alumni, but not so great that they formed ASU’s national identity. Or so poor that they embarrassed the school.
Flash forward to 2011. ASU’s first Black Out game against Missouri. Packed house. Crow being interviewed pregame. He tells Sun Devil Nation how exited he is that apparel sales increased by 700%. Oh no, he’s J Russell Nelson in a better suit. Crow goes on to destroy the sports complex and spends $300,000,000 to shrink stadium so that he can convert parking into condos.
So why should I think that he is going to do anything about Edwards or Anderson? As long as athletics do not become an albatross, Herm and Ray will have jobs as long as they want them. I’m just trying to figure out how Crow will rationalize giving RA another raise above the guaranteed $600,000 annual bonus he now receives on top of last year’s pay raise.
